The Bookworm Confessions

Brief Review: Dead Until Dark

I am done with Charlaine Harris’ first book from The Southern Vampire Mysteries, Dead Until Dark. It is a really good read! Be forewarned. It is a page-turner. When you start reading this book, it’ll be hard to put it down.

I read the e-book version so I am not sure how many pages the book is in paperback. I read it for five days. I can normally read a book this size in a day or two but since I only read at least two to three hours a day, it took me longer.

In Dead Until Dark, Sookie Stackhouse, the main character, is a telepathic who falls in love with a vampire, Bill Compton. It would have been a simple life for Sookie had it not been for the reported murder cases happening around Bon Temps. And the people murdered has a connection with her and her brother, Jason. One of the murdered people was even their grandmother.

Weird things started happening in her life. She found out that her boss, Sam Merlotte, is actually a shape shifter. She allowed a stray dog to enter her house only to find a naked Sam beside her on the bed in the morning! She met another vampire, Eric Northman, who has a higher authority than Bill and is seemingly enamored by her. She found out that a popular singer who is identified with Hawaii has become a vampire who only answers to the name Bubba. And then she discovered that the murderer is his brother’s friend Rene Lenier, her friend, Arlene’s boyfriend whom she thought was really caring and a good partner to her friend.

The book is funny and captivating. And be prepared for a bit of weirdness. When you read it, you would want to watch True Blood and give faces to the characters in the book. You will not regret reading this one. A vampire story that is entirely different from the ones we normally read. This is Twilight with more depth.

I am giving this book 5 out of 5 stars.
